116 Health at Every Size, Biases, and the Anti Diet Approach with Whitney Catalano RDN [Interview]

Listen to 116 Health at Every Size, Biases, and the Anti Diet Approach with Whitney Catalano RDN [Interview]Whitney Catalano is a Registered Dietitian specializing in intuitive eating for driven and passionate women who are ready to reclaim their life by breaking up with dieting. She adopts an anti-diet view and stresses connecting with your body’s food preferences, hunger and fullness cues, and finding a weight that is effortless for your body. In this episode we discuss: How social trends around body image set us up for a bad relationship with food, how these things can be passed down from parents to kids. Kids are sponges, and if they see their parents engaging with food in a negative way they will likely develop the same negative food mindsets. The restriction vs binging pendulum. If you are struggling with binge eating , it may be because you tried to over restricted yourself in the past and vice versa. Body size is not necessarily an indicator of self control or laziness. Biases todays body size and how bigger people are shamed from multiple different areas of life , most notably healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, etc) The inner bully - being a bully to yourself / shaming yourself when you make a bad food decision, the importance of recognizing these thoughts exist, and not always taking them as gospel. 113 Breaking the Rules and Creating Your Own Path with Katie Duke ACNP-BC [Interview]

Listen to 113 Breaking the Rules and Creating Your Own Path with Katie Duke ACNP-BC [Interview]Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Katie Duke left in her mid 20’s to pursue a feeling inside her that there was “something greater out there”, and that feeling led her to New York City. Ms Duke has 15 years experience in Nursing, with the last 4 years spent working as a Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specializing in Inpatient Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in New York City at one of the Nation’s top hospitals, Mount Sinai Hospital. In addition to her full time career as an NP, she also serves as a clinical preceptor to NYU ACNP graduate students, editorial contributor, motivational speaker, mentor, agency represented social media influencer, hosts the “Bad Decisions Podcast”, and is the founder of the “Duke It Up Event” which is an empowerment and mentoring workshop. Katie has been featured in Emergency Room Nurse on the Primetime ABC Medical Documentary series “NY MED”, and its spinoff, “NY ER” on the Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC, and Discovery Life Channels. Albeit she had a controversial turn on NY Med related to a post on social media, she realized that the best way to work through life’s tough lessons is to own your mistakes. For the last 6 years she has been dedicated to leading others by sharing her good and bad experiences and lessons, and empowering others to embrace and grow from their not so glorious moments. In this episode, we discuss: - Katie’s story about when she was fired for “trying to do too much” and/or an “insensitive” social media post, how it affected her and fueled her to expose a punitive culture for nurses, and to help others in similar situations - Katie’s entrepreneurial journey with her online brand and message for those that don't have it all together (because no one really does) - Her advice for HCPs who want to utilize social media to share their story: Know your hospital’s social media policy, be authentically you, be ok with the ups and downs, and don't feel like you need to conform to what’s popular or trending. 108 Moving Forward After Rejection and Resisting Self Sabotage with Stephanie Essenfeld MFT

Listen to 108 Moving Forward After Rejection and Resisting Self Sabotage with Stephanie Essenfeld MFTStephanie Essenfeld has been dedicated to the study and practice of family psychology and therapy for the past eight years. She loves working in collaboration with her clients and helps them take advantage of their strengths to solve their problems. She focuses in effective communication, empathy, rebuilding self-esteem, boundaries, decision making, overcoming traumas, and mindfulness, in order to be able to form and maintain healthy relationships with others and most importantly, with themselves. She uses her instagram account @therapyuntangled to offer tools for personal growth, facilitate psychoeducation, and encourage self-reflection in those who do not have access to therapy or who want to use her content as a supplement to their own therapy. In this episode we discuss: Radical acceptance - Accepting that pain is part of life and rejecting pain can hurt you the same as genuine suffering. Reject the idea that if we're feeling pain then we can not be OK at the same time, or that we're not supposed to be sad or angry when things don’t go well. Accepting pain of any kind, big or small, with all your being , is the key to moving forward. You can still be happy with pain in your life. Open yourself up to rejection because it has nothing to do with your worth as a person. Treat it as feedback that tells you what you can do differently to succeed in the future. To move forward we have to accept the events of our past , the events of our present, that everything has a cause, and also that we have limitations in the future. Life can be worth living even with painful events in it. To stop self sabotage ask "What’s the best that can happen?" not "What’s the worst that can happen." Also, recognize the self fulfilling traits of labels others have placed on you. Understand that these labels come with a certain set of characteristics that don’t have to define you if you don't let them. Interpersonal effectiveness skills - There are 4 types of communication: Aggressive, Passive, Passive-Aggressive, and Assertive which is the most effective. 070 The Foundation Of Your Health With Dr Mohammad Rimawi DPM [Interview]

Listen to 070 The Foundation Of Your Health With Dr Mohammad Rimawi DPM [Interview]The foundation of your health starts where you may ask? Your feet! I got to chat with Mohammad Rimawi, DPM, a board-qualified foot, rearfoot, and reconstructive ankle surgeon with specializations in traumatic foot and ankle injuries. We start off the show talking about the importance and the pivotal role your feet play in the alignment of the rest of your body, proper care for your feet after a long day on your feet and more. We also get into BURNOUT and Dr. Rimawi shares his take and experience with burnout, along with the courage he mustered up to take action. Dr. Rimawi earned his doctorate from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, where he made his mark. Not only did he graduate above the 90th percentile of his class and serve as class president for four years, but he was also recognized with the Student Service Award. That award goes to the student voted by the graduating class as making the biggest impact on the field of podiatry. Beyond his peers’ recognition, Dr. Rimawi was inducted into the Pi Delta Honor Society for his achievements in his research and his studies. Dr. Rimawi continued on to a three-year reconstructive foot and ankle surgery residency at DeKalb Medical Center and Jefferson Health. His colleagues and the hospital staff at the latter named him the Podiatric Resident of the Year. Dr. Rimawi is still impressing in his field. He’s a published author and accomplished lecturer, as well as an associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. NOTE: We had some ~minor~ connection difficulties here and there, so there are moments of some static. We feel that overall this minor issues do not take away from the content of a good interview. 064 Secondary Traumatic Stress and Compassion Fatigue with Lisa LaBrie, RN, BSN [Interview]

Listen to 064 Secondary Traumatic Stress and Compassion Fatigue with Lisa LaBrie, RN, BSN [Interview]Lisa LaBrie is a nurse, educator, author and speaker focused on helping healthcare professionals learn to care for themselves in order to find joy and meaning in their lives. She began her career in nursing in 2004, starting as a new graduate in a pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant unit. In 2009, she moved to adult oncology and bone marrow transplant. In 2001, she helped build a new allogeneic bone marrow transplant program including designing an education program for the nursing staff. From there, she worked as the inpatient nursing educator. In 2014, she struggled to find balance and happiness with work and life. She was regularly exhausted and unsatisfied at work. She wavered between numbness and feeling overwhelmed by emotions. During that time she changed her role at work several times trying to find a solution. Eventually, she went back to school for a Master's in teaching and planned to leave the nursing profession. In 2017, when she graduated, she took a leave of absence and went to Europe. Since that time, Lisa realized that she was experiencing serious burnout and compassion fatigue. She spent a great deal of time working with a therapist, reconnecting with herself and her relationships, and realizing that so many others are struggling with the same issues in nursing. She now writes and speaks about self-care for healthcare professionals. 059: Resilience: The Answer To Burnout? The Six Key Elements

Listen to 059: Resilience: The Answer To Burnout? The Six Key ElementsYou may know resilience as someone’s ability to adapt to life’s adversities. Although absolutely true, we have a few bones to pick with the delivery and timing of resilience trainings. Resilience is considered to be a long-term developmental strategy versus a short-term tactical strategy used for comfort. So why is that many organizations respond to negative outcomes such as burnout by slapping everyone in the face by offering resilience trainings? In fact, I would argue that many healthcare professionals demonstrate strong resilience and high persistence- I mean, we got this far through the hurdles and challenges in our grueling education and training. We explore the six major factors, or “Six P’s” of resilience in this episode with a bonus factor thrown in there, because why not. If you enjoy this episode and the show, we ask you for a HUGE favor. Please rate us (ahem, preferably those five stars) and leave a short yet sweet and honest review! Nothing moves our show forward more than that. It makes us so grateful and we always do a little dance when someone takes the time to make our day like that. We thank you so much! 062 Burnout, Boredom, and Glass Ceilings with Tavona Boggs, PT [Interview]

Listen to 062 Burnout, Boredom, and Glass Ceilings with Tavona Boggs, PT [Interview]TaVona Boggs and I share many funny analogies to discuss a more serious matter- burnout in healthcare. She had her beginnings in the physical therapy world 17 years ago. TaVona quickly moved up to clinical director and when she was denied PTO to see her brother graduate from NYU, she resigned and began her own contracting company, Balance Care and Wellness. Although she found that she gained greater flexibility and autonomy this way, she recognized there was still a glass ceiling. She gained certifications in wellness and life coaching, which gave her more excitement and opportunities in her work. She saw OTs/PTs fresh out of school not too long along with over 100k+ in debt and realized that she can help her profession. She created the Burnout Resilience Program at the hospital she works at and teaches her colleagues about “Thrival Skills.” TaVona offers many golden nuggets on some of the biggest things that contribute to burnout- the things you may not even be thinking of.
